NCBWDC Support for Eric’s ID Amendment Act (B26-0619)

NCBWDC strongly supports legislation co-introduced by Councilmember Zachary Parker and Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, B26-0619 – Eric’s ID Amendment Act of 2026. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with more than 3,200 members across 24 states and the District of Columbia. Our mission is to advocate on behalf of Black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment. Our health and wellness priorities include raising awareness of health disparities and solutions, while also expanding access to health and wellness information that supports healthier individuals, families, and communities.

Eric’s ID Law aligns directly with these priorities by recognizing the experiences of individuals living with nonapparent disabilities and providing an additional tool to support safer, more informed interactions with law enforcement and emergency response personnel.

Importantly, the movement behind Eric’s ID Law extends well beyond the District. In Maryland, the legislation was enacted in 2025 following unanimous passage in both chambers of the General Assembly, and Maryland residents with nonapparent disabilities may now voluntarily add a butterfly symbol to their driver’s license or identification card. Similar versions of Eric’s ID Law have since been introduced in Delaware, Georgia, and New York, demonstrating growing interest across multiple jurisdictions in providing individuals with nonapparent disabilities a voluntary means of communicating their needs during interactions with law enforcement and first responders.
